"Darkest Dungeon" is a computer roleplaying game developed by Red Hook Studios. The game primarily portrays themes of cosmic horror, popularized by authors such as H.P. Lovecraft. While many video games strive for photorealism, Darkest Dungeon uses stylized illustrations used to convey the tone of the setting. While the art assets of the game are two-dimensional, the game uses a three-dimensional engine. This allows the game to show depth by moving the towards and away from the screen. A drawback of using a two-dimensional design for the game is that animating individual frames and poses for each character would be both costly and time consuming, especially with the level of detail that the lead artist Brooks Gordon wanted to show. Instead, the characters in the game alternate between idle animations and dynamically placed still poses. The idle animations are similar to those made which can be made in photoshop, but pre-rendered animations such as this could be difficult to implement into a game without bloating the file size. The game is run using a custom engine built using C++, and it is likely that the game engine is equipped to render these idle animations in real time. This would allow the developers to simply load the rigged sprites into the game as needed, and the engine would render the animation without any sort of compression.
